The only thing standing in the way of you receiving that coveted promotion is your actions. And the only guaranteed aspect of the modern workplace is that there is nothing guaranteed. Dedication and solid goals are steps in the right direction. Using these Power Tools will definitely put you on the path to be noticed and that is more than half of the battle to being promoted.
Improve your Work Ethic
Do More - Volunteer to Make a Difference Volunteer for assignments that expose your skills. Look for especially challenging projects that other people have declined.
Arrive Early - Stay Late: Arriving early will help you to get your day planned and underway before everyone else gets to work and it starts to get busy. Your boss is probably early and will see that you are there.
Be a Solution Creator not a Problem Maker Anybody can find problems within organizations. My experience is that you don’t need to find them…they will find you. Sometimes they have a special skill of finding problems and reporting them.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help - there is no way you can be expected to know how to do everything, but getting something wrong because you did not ask for help is inexcusable.
Learn something new. Make sure that your boss knows what you are learning or studying towards. This is especially important when it comes time to consider someone for a promotion, it shows that you are thinking further ahead than today.
Learn your boss’ job. If you know how to do his/her job then YOU become the obvious stand in when he/she goes on vacation or is away sick. More importantly who is going to be the obvious choice to replace him/her as he moves on to a new position?
Handle the Next Level at This Level If you are a manager and want to become a vice president then, start working like a vice president. Find a vice president that is open to mentoring you for the next level.
Be Loyal to the organization - Don’t partake in office gossip: Everyone at some time will feel unhappy with their job - do not feel inclined to voice that unhappiness to everyone on general.
Professionalism - Professionalism is the pursuit of Excellence not just competence. True professionals commit themselves to the pursuit of happiness and do not allow themselves to lapse into self-satisfied contentment. Ask yourself this question - Do other people consider me a professional?
Think of yourself as self employed - you are making an investment in a career, this is the business you have chosen to be in, make sure that you market yourself properly so that you will be better able to sell your time to the highest bidder.
Be prepared to blow your own horn. When you are asked what you bring to a position, or why you should be given the promotion, this is the opportunity to brag about what you can do and why you are the best person to do it.
Announce That You Want It! Many times employees miss out on promotions because the decision makers and career influencers do not know they are interested in being promoted. Announce that you want to go to the next career level!
Have Fun and Know Where you are Going
LOVE YOUR JOB !!!!! This is of utmost importance - without this you will not do any of the above successfully as you don’t really want to be where you are.
Plan your future - Do you have a clear picture of where you want your career to be a year from now? How about in 5 or 15 years? Career plans lay out the roadmap for future success. Career Coaching
Career Coaches give you the focused personal help you need to make the very most of your career.
Have an unyielding champion. A coach is always on your side, wanting what you want and encouraging you to get there. When you falter or question your ability to reach your goals, your coach will motivate you to keep going.
Work with someone who will listen attentively, but not be afraid to tell it like it is. Although a coach is your undeterred supporter, he or she will also be straightforward and honest. Coaching is grounded in inquiry and coaches will ask the tough questions to get you to the heart of the issue.
